The Handless Maiden

This new opera by librettist Katherine Koller and composer Benton Roark will be presented in a workshop reading on June 19 at 3:30 pm at Dunbar Heights United in Vancouver.

The Handless Maiden is inspired by an old tale heard in many countries around the world. It is the story of female empowerment, of discovering one’s own strengths despite disfigurement, banishment and loss, and it is set in the wild, mythic present.  After paying her father’s debt with her hands, and losing her father to the river, the maiden flees from her home to the forest. Handless, she struggles to survive when she crosses the river to an orchard, and back again, renewed.

Katherine Koller and Benton Roark wrote an excerpt of The Handless Maiden at the Tapestry Opera Composer-Librettist LibLab in Toronto, where it was later performed at Tapestry Briefs. The full opera was developed with the assistance of The Edmonton Arts Council, The Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Canada Council for the Arts, as well as Redshift Music Society and Tempest Flute Ensemble. The June 19 reading is part of #indieoperaweek and features soprano Teiya Kasahara.
